GROWING WITH PURPOSE

01 / The woman behind the heart

Before a foundation,
there was Miriam.

United States Navy veteranHer service is part of her legacy.

A brilliant mind.
A free spirit.
A smile you didn’t forget.

Born in Kokomo, Indiana, Miriam Makeba Mallory Rutherford attended Kokomo High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy. She later worked at Chrysler and Delco Electronics.

She was a mother, a grandmother, a sister, and a beloved aunt. She enjoyed music, dancing, playing cards, going for walks, and traveling with her children. Time with the people she loved mattered to her.

Her family remembers her intelligence, her free spirit, and a smile that filled a room with warmth. We carry those memories with us as we begin this work in her name.

Read Miriam’s obituary

Her whole story, held with dignity

She deserved safety.
She deserved care.
She deserved a home.

Miriam also experienced abuse, lived with mental illness, and faced homelessness. As her family, we want to honor her honestly—including the painful parts of her life.

Her experiences matter deeply to the purpose taking shape here. They call us toward compassionate mental health support, safety for people experiencing abuse, and the stability and belonging of a home.

Remembering Miriam means holding space for her joy, her service, her struggles, and the people who loved her. It means carrying her memory forward with care for the whole person.

Her life and service are documented in her obituary and family memorial. Her experiences of abuse, mental illness, and homelessness are shared here by her nephew.

A promise from her nephew

My aunt’s heart, mind and compassion
should be shared with the world.

For years, this began as ideas written down.
Now, it begins to take root—in loving memory of Aunt Miriam.
